This course deals with all the pitfalls and challenges of blended families: your children, my children, our children. The course is based on the book by Ron Deal, The smart stepfamily – 7 steps to a healthy family. Ron is an international speaker on this theme and the aspects that will be focused on from a pastoral angle are the following:

– God provides tools and direction for this journey
– Adjust your expectations
– Your marriage should be a top priority
– Parents must form a team
– The respective roles of parent and step-parent
– Unique challenges for parents
– Typical pitfalls for blended families

Boundaries & Limitations

Boundaries & Limitations

This course is about boundaries – when to say yes, when to say no, and when and how to maintain a healthy distance within relationships. The content of this course is based on the book, Boundaries, by Henry Cloud and John Townsend. Clear guidelines are spelled out as to where to draw the line within a variety of relationships. For people who are struggling with unresolved pain, it will obviously be much more difficult to draw such boundaries as there is usually a great fear of rejection – there are also a lot of practical guidelines around this aspect.
This course is presented in two parts and in this first part the most important areas that are addressed are the following:
– A life without boundaries
– What are boundaries?
– Problems around boundaries
– How are boundaries developed and established?
– Seven laws regarding boundaries
– General myths regarding boundaries
– Boundaries and your family
– Boundaries and your friends

Children & the Process of Loss, Grief & Mourning

Children & the Process of Loss, Grief & Mourning

Up until the sixties, a strong thought pattern existed stating that young children could not really experience emotions regarding grief. Later research, however, indicated more and more the opposite that: “Anyone old enough to love, is old enough to mourn.”
Based on this background the following will be focused on in this course:
– The influence of transitional events and losses regarding moving house, divorce, and death.
– Risk factors regarding the adjustment after loss.
– Pathological, complicated, or traumatic grief among children.
– Short-term energy relieving behaviour.
– The death of a pet and a grandparent.
– Practical guidelines regarding the grieving process.
– Practical and Pastoral guidelines

Depression

Depression

In this course, the emphasis is on the pastoral guidance of the depressed person. Depression is the main cause of suicide – 15% of those who are severely depressed will ultimately commit suicide. Research shows, for example, a 300% increase in suicide statistics among young people compared to 50 years ago. This is therefore an extremely important subject.

Aspects that will be discussed include the following:
– The symptoms of depression
– The grieving process and depression
– Ten stress factors that can promote depression
– Personality dynamics that can give rise to depression
– The role of anger and anxiety
– When is medication and hospitalization beneficial?
– Basic pastoral guidelines for life happiness and longevity

The content of this course is based on the book; Happiness is a Choice, by Christian Psychiatrists Frank Minirth and Paul Meier (Depression – Symptoms, Causes, and Healing). Since it was first published in the late seventies, it was a top seller. In the latest edition, the latest scientific research on this theme has been updated. From a pastoral point of view, this is currently the best book around the theme of depression.
